Individual, Premarital, Marriage and Family Therapy

Soaring EagleThe mighty eagle can soar to a height of one-half mile. Soaring far above the confining terrain; it enjoys a position of great strength.

An individual, couple, or family in the midst of crisis is often too clouded by emotion to have a clear perspective. That is why many people seek counseling and guidance: to be supported and directed by a professional to rise to that position of strength where they can clearly see solutions.

SOARING CHRISTIAN COUNSELING is a private practice established in 1986 by Margaret Phillips, M.S. She serves individuals, couples seeking premarital counseling, couples in marital distress, family groups, and church staffs in conflict. Along with traditional therapy sessions, workshops, group therapy, and experiential adventure courses are available.

Individual psychotherapy: Therapy is offered to individuals struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, recovery from emotional and verbal abuse, grief including loss of a loved one due to death, infidelity, or divorce, and codependency struggles caused by living in a past or present toxic family system. Treatment focuses on the whole spectrum of emotions involved in past and present traumas with a focus on healing (body, soul, and spirit) and resolve of those issues that interfere with a fully functioning present life.

Marriage counseling: As a licensed Marital and Family Therapist, Mrs. Phillips is skilled in identifying and assessing the dynamics that commonly interfere with the ability to have a sustainable healthy marital relationship: power struggles, loss of sexual desire, struggles with closeness and distance; problems with in-laws, finances, parental ideologies, religious beliefs, blended families, inability to communicate and problem solve, presence of narcissistic behaviors, and infidelity. Issues are explored and addressed in an honest direct manner in a safe respectful context.

Family therapy: Counseling is offered to whole family groups, family of origin parent-child groups, family of origin sibling groups, blended family members, and parent-child family members. This generally involves an examination of roles and rules, both healthy and toxic, an opportunity to directly renegotiate “what’s not working”, uncover family secrets, and identify and resolve offenses.

Premarital counseling: Through a course written by Mrs. Phillips, Building Your Marriage Ark, the couple is able to identify their personality styles (both strengths and weakness) and learn to honor their differences: taught a set of communication skills that allow them to identify areas of conflict and how to problem solve in a respectful but direct manner; identify potential areas of conflict around in-laws, finances, and intimacy. This educational and therapeutic approach usually requires 6 to 10 hours of meeting.
